Tony D The Jook Joint (Rip Roarin' Records)
As fine as Tony D's all acoustic 2001 blues recording The Size of Your Shoes turned out to be, it's a real pleasure to hear the Capital City guitar slinger strap on the Strat and turn up the volume once again. A year and a half in the making, The Jook Joint (Diteodoro's sixth record and first band release since 2000) is his most varied and satisfying collection to date. Billed as a "montage homage to all the great artists that paved the way before us," the guitarist tips his hat to names like Hendrix and Big Joe Williams, with passion, patience and purpose. But D also stretches out with spicy surf nuggets (Ass Tango) and laidback swinging jazz (Fat City Blues). The set highlight is the closer, Turn Out the Lights, and instrumental with just a touch of Manuel Galban twang.
Catch Tony D's The Jook Joint CD release at the Rainbow, Saturday, March 20 at 9 pm.
